Ekurhuleni Taxi Shutdown Ends: Services Resume After SANTACO Talks
4days ago
Parts of Ekurhuleni are facing severe disruptions as the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) strike takes effect. The industrial action follows the impoundment of 17 taxis by the Gauteng Transport Department for offences, including operating unroadworthy vehicles.
Taxi services in Benoni, Katlehong, and Kempton Park have been severely affected, leaving thousands of commuters stranded. Many people attempting to get to work or return home were left without alternatives as taxis halted operations.
At the Germiston taxi rank, commuters shared their frustrations, with some walking distances of up to 25 kilometers to reach their workplaces. One commuter expressed concerns about using e-hailing services, citing safety risks amid tensions between taxi operators and ride-hailing services.
The strike highlights broader challenges in public transport and the economic ripple effects of sudden industrial action, with many workers unable to report for duty. Authorities have urged commuters to remain patient while the situation unfolds and called on taxi operators to resolve disputes swiftly.
The strike continues to disrupt daily routines, underscoring the importance of ensuring safe, reliable, and accountable public transport services for residents across Gauteng.
