Community Tip-Off Leads to R350M Volksrust Drug Lab Bust, Says SAPS Operation shanyela 2
Sep 21, 2025
Volksrust, Mpumalanga – The case against six men linked to a clandestine R350 million methamphetamine laboratory in Volksrust has been postponed, a Mpumalanga court ruled on Friday. The five Mexican nationals and one South African arrested in the major bust will remain in custody until their next appearance on October 10, as authorities work to identify the property owner and potential accomplices.
The arrests follow a high-profile raid on a farm in Oudehoutkloof on Thursday, September 19, where police dismantled a sophisticated drug manufacturing operation.
The operation was triggered by a tip-off about suspicious chemical activity. Upon raiding the farm, members of the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit discovered a large-scale laboratory equipped with precursor chemicals, manufacturing equipment, and a significant quantity of finished crystal meth.
The methamphetamine, with an estimated street value of R350 million, was found meticulously packed inside freezers and concealed in lunch boxes and buckets in an attempt to avoid detection.
“When police arrived, the suspects attempted to escape. Five were arrested on the scene, while two others managed to flee into nearby bushes,” a police statement revealed. The farm was immediately secured, and forensic teams have been processing the extensive crime scene.

The five accused – whose identities have not yet been disclosed – appeared in the Volksrust Magistrate’s Court facing charges under the Drugs and Drug Trafficking Act. The Mexican nationals also face additional charges under the Immigration Act. A sixth suspect, the South African farm caretaker, faces possible ammunition charges.
Hawks spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Magonseni Nkosi, confirmed the accused were remanded in custody. “Because the suspects were remanded in custody, no evidence will be tampered with. We have a 24-hour guard on the scene,” Nkosi stated, highlighting the seriousness of the investigation.
Authorities are investigating potential links between the Volksrust lab and powerful Latin American drug cartels. The presence of Mexican nationals aligns with a global trend of cartels establishing production facilities abroad to supply international markets more efficiently.
“We are still trying to locate the owner of the property as well as the people who were involved,” said Nkosi. He indicated that the scale of the operation suggests a complex network. “Law enforcement believes there would have had to be many suppliers involved due to the large quantity of drugs manufactured in the lab.”
This bust represents a significant blow to a potentially sophisticated international syndicate operating within South Africa’s borders. The investigation will now focus on uncovering the full supply chain, from the sourcing of chemicals to the distribution network for the narcotics.

The successful operation underscores the ongoing efforts by South African authorities to combat organized drug trafficking. The seizure of such a substantial laboratory prevents a vast quantity of methamphetamine from reaching the streets, mitigating the associated social and health crises.
The case has been postponed to October 10, 2025, for further investigation and possible addition of more suspects. The postponement allows the Hawks to delve deeper into the national and international connections of this sophisticated drug manufacturing ring.
