Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Blade Nzimande has detailed South Africa's coordinated approach to artificial intelligence adoption in higher education:
"We're not ahead of the curve, but we're not being left behind," Nzimande stated, acknowledging ongoing efforts to onboard all 26 public universities.
The minister highlighted key challenges:
"We're using our G20 presidency to ensure poorer nations aren't excluded from AI advancements," he added.
Nzimande emphasized UNESCO-aligned principles:
✔ Anti-Weaponization: Citing concerns over AI military applications
✔ Social Justice Focus: Directing technology toward development goals
✔ Continental Coordination: Through Africa's STIA-2032 science strategy
"AI can uplift poorer countries when used ethically," the minister noted, referencing South Africa's work with BRICS nations on responsible innovation.
Ongoing projects include:
"These technologies must solve real African challenges," Nzimande stressed, pointing to the National Advisory Council on Innovation's comprehensive AI strategy report.
