Khanyisa Mayo marked his Kaizer Chiefs debut with a goal against Marumo Gallants at FNB Stadium. The 27-year-old striker follows in the footsteps of his father, Amakhosi legend Patrick Mayo.

Johannesburg, South Africa – As the son of Amakhosi legend Patrick Mayo, Khanyisa Mayo could not have imagined a more fitting start to his Kaizer Chiefs career. The 27-year-old striker found the back of the net on his debut, scoring the opener against Marumo Gallants at the FNB Stadium in their Betway Premiership clash on Wednesday.

Although the match ended in a 1-1 draw, Mayo’s goal offered a glimpse of what he can bring to the Glamour Boys’ attack this season.

“A Very Emotional Moment”

Speaking to the club’s official website after the match, Mayo described the occasion as one of the most special moments of his career:

“Walking onto the pitch was a moment I could celebrate personally, but I was aware that there was a job to be done. It was very emotional. I can’t really describe the elation I felt inside. It motivates me to want to do it more, especially to help the team achieve its targets.”

The forward credited his teammates and coaches for making him feel welcome since joining Amakhosi, highlighting the strong support system that has helped him settle quickly.

Carrying a Famous Legacy

Mayo’s debut goal carried extra meaning as he followed in the footsteps of his father, Patrick Mayo, who also wore the Chiefs jersey with pride nearly two decades ago.

“Living up to my father’s legacy, filling his shoes was very special,” he explained. “It’s not easy growing up under that pressure, but I take it as it comes. We are all people in our own right and we all have to work hard to be successful.”

Room for Growth

Despite making an immediate impact, Mayo insists that he has more to offer as he adapts to his new surroundings:

“This was only my first game and I believe I have more room to improve as I familiarise myself with the structures. But I’d say I have already settled in to some extent because South Africa is always home, and I am playing for the biggest club in the country.”

Perspective on the Result

Chiefs dominated much of the game against Gallants and will feel they should have collected all three points. Mayo, however, struck a more philosophical tone:

“Today was not the result we wanted, but we got something from the game and look forward to doing better next time. We train hard and treat every game like it’s a cup final. We are striving for consistency at a high level.”

Amakhosi Faithful: The 12th Man

Mayo also paid tribute to the Chiefs supporters, whose unwavering passion left a mark on his debut:

“The supporters always come out in numbers to support us. They are our 12th man, giving us incredible moral support when they cheer us. I encourage them to keep coming to watch us and help us realise our ambitions together.”

Looking Ahead

While the debut ended in a draw, Mayo’s goal has already endeared him to the Amakhosi Faithful. With his work ethic, hunger, and family legacy driving him, he looks set to become a key figure in Kaizer Chiefs’ pursuit of silverware this season.
