Search for Missing Pilot Resumes After Durban Airshow Crash
Aug 15, 2025
Durban – Search and rescue teams are scouring the waters off Suncoast Beach after a light aircraft crashed into the ocean on Thursday afternoon. Emergency services, law enforcement, and paramedics remain on the scene as efforts to locate the pilot continue.
According to ALS Paramedics spokesperson Gareth Jamieson, a video circulating on social media earlier in the day showed the small plane performing an aerial display before it struck the surf. The incident occurred near Virginia Airport, a short distance from the beachfront.
Initial reports indicate the aircraft had been conducting display manoeuvres when it lost control and plunged into the sea. The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), supported by local lifeguards, launched immediate search operations.
“Our teams are on-site and paramedics are standing by for any required medical intervention,” Jamieson said.
The wreckage of the aircraft has largely been recovered, but the pilot remains unaccounted for. Authorities on the ground have shifted their focus from rescue to possible recovery operations.
The crash site is located close to Suncoast Casino, a busy section of Durban’s main beachfront, not far from uShaka Marine World and the city’s harbour. As the sun set over the coastline, rescue vessels could be seen patrolling the waters.
KwaZulu-Natal officials, including the MEC for Transport, have been briefed on the situation, with further updates expected once search operations conclude.
This is a developing story and more details will be released as they become available.
