A tragic road accident in Imbali, Pietermaritzburg, has claimed the lives of three school children after a scholar transport minibus crashed into a creche early on Wednesday morning.
According to the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI), the vehicle—used to transport learners to school—lost control before veering off the road and colliding with the Senzokuhle Preschool.

RTI spokesperson Sindi Msimang confirmed that eyewitness accounts revealed the driver jumped out of the moving vehicle after allegedly experiencing brake failure. The minibus, left unmanned, continued downhill and ploughed into the preschool building.
“The driver abandoned the vehicle with children still inside. Sadly, three young lives were lost at the scene. Eleven others sustained injuries, with two reported to be in critical condition,” Msimang said.
The accident occurred along a steep downhill road notorious for collisions. Inspectors noted that barriers on the route were already damaged, suggesting previous incidents.
Msimang added that the minibus appeared to be unroadworthy, highlighting serious concerns about vehicle safety in the scholar transport sector.
“You don’t need to be an expert to see that this vehicle was in a very bad condition. We urge drivers and owners to ensure brakes and other safety measures are thoroughly checked before transporting children,” she said.
Police have since taken the driver into custody for further investigation. The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) has also expressed concern and is expected to engage with authorities to prevent further tragedies.

Paramedics confirmed that the injured learners were rushed to local hospitals, while families of the deceased are receiving support. Officials say psychosocial services will be made available to survivors and witnesses.
The accident has reignited debate over the safety of scholar transport in South Africa, with calls for stricter enforcement of roadworthiness standards and driver accountability.
“This is a devastating loss for the community,” Msimang said. “We cannot afford to lose more young lives due to negligence and unsafe vehicles.”
