Germiston, South Africa — A tense standoff erupted this morning as police and municipal officials moved to evict illegal occupiers from residential flats, with the situation quickly escalating into violence.
Public Order Policing (POP) units, assisted by municipal employees in orange vests, attempted to gain access after residents blocked the main entrance. Once inside, officers forced entry into individual units using bricks and tools, while removing beds and household belongings.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with residents throwing stones at law enforcement throughout the operation.
In response to the escalating confrontation, police fired rubber bullets to disperse residents. Authorities have not yet confirmed any injuries, but the operation remains ongoing.
Officials stated that the occupants were living illegally on the property, prompting the enforcement action.
"This is part of broader efforts to reclaim municipal properties and ensure lawful occupation," an official commented, requesting anonymity.
The standoff has drawn attention from local media and residents, raising concerns about housing shortages, illegal occupation, and municipal enforcement measures. Community organizations have urged authorities to consider temporary relocation solutions for vulnerable residents.
