Polokwane’s R180 Million Softball Stadium Remains Incomplete Amid Mismanagement Concerns

Polokwane, Limpopo – The multi-million-rand softball stadium in Polokwane remains unfinished more than a decade after plans were first announced, sparking frustration among residents and raising questions about governance and project management.

Project Background and Delays

The stadium project, initially conceptualised in 2008, aimed to transform Polokwane into a sports and tourism hub capable of hosting international-standard softball competitions. Officially launched in 2018, the facility was initially budgeted at R200 million.

By 2020, only R85 million had been allocated, and a contractor was appointed at R57 million, well below the amount required to complete the facility. Disputes over variation orders and contractual constraints caused further delays, stalling construction by 2022.

Polokwane Executive Mayor John Mpe explained the challenges:

“Even if we had approved the variation order, the contractor indicated they would not have been able to complete the project. That’s when we requested the Municipal Infrastructure Support Agency and the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture to conduct a joint assessment.”

Rising Costs and Revised Completion Plan

The joint review determined that the stadium would require at least R184 million to complete. A new contractor and consultant have been appointed, with construction now proceeding in phases. Authorities project completion by 2027, nearly two decades after the stadium was first envisioned.

Despite these assurances, local residents remain disillusioned, viewing the idle facility as a symbol of poor governance and unfulfilled promises.

“It’s dreams deferred,” said one community member, pointing to the half-built structure.

Officials Defend Long-Term Vision

Mayor Mpe emphasised that the project will ultimately position Polokwane as a leading sports capital in South Africa, attracting athletes and tourists alike. He also pledged closer oversight to ensure the phased construction is completed efficiently.
