Johannesburg – Patriotic Alliance (PA) deputy leader Kenny Kunene has officially returned to the Johannesburg city council following weeks of political drama, controversy, and a forensic investigation into his conduct.
Kunene was sworn in on Friday in Braamfontein by council speaker Margaret Arnolds, resuming his role as a Proportional Representation (PR) councillor. His reinstatement marks a significant political turnaround after he resigned from the mayoral committee and council earlier this year.

Kunene stepped down in July after being found at the home of murder-accused businessman Katiso “KT” Molefe during a police raid. The incident sparked questions about his role and judgment, leading to his suspension and a forensic investigation commissioned by the PA.
The law firm’s forensic report, released this week, cleared Kunene of any misconduct. According to PA secretary-general Chinelle Stevens, the report confirmed Kunene’s explanation that he was at the property solely to facilitate an exclusive interview for Africa News Global. Witness testimonies and corroborating evidence supported his account.
In his absence, former DA MP Liam Jacobs, who defected to the PA, briefly filled Kunene’s council seat. However, following the report’s findings, Jacobs resigned to allow Kunene’s return and will shift focus to Cape Town, where he is set to be the PA’s mayoral candidate for the 2026 municipal elections.
The PA leadership mounted a strong campaign for Kunene’s reinstatement, with party president Gayton McKenzie leading a media offensive earlier this week. McKenzie even threatened to resign as Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture and withdraw from the Government of National Unity (GNU) if Kunene was not reinstated.

Johannesburg mayor Dada Morero is expected to confirm Kunene’s reappointment as Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Transport in the coming days. If finalised, this would cement Kunene’s political comeback and restore his influence in one of the city’s most crucial portfolios.
The swearing-in ceremony was marked by formalities and symbolism, with council speaker Arnolds wishing Kunene well in representing the people of Johannesburg.
