Kaizer Chiefs Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr. explains the signing of ex-Sundowns star Lebohang Maboe. Get the latest on his return, contract, and role for the season.

In a significant move to bolster their squad for a demanding season, Kaizer Chiefs have officially announced the signing of seasoned midfielder Lebohang Maboe.

The 30-year-old arrives at Naturena as a free agent after concluding his successful seven-year stint with rivals Mamelodi Sundowns at the end of June. The deal marks a homecoming for Maboe, who was initially developed in the Kaizer Chiefs youth system.

Maboe brings a winning pedigree that the Amakhosi management is eager to leverage. During his time with Sundowns, he amassed an impressive 12 trophies, including the recent African Football League title, making 183 appearances for the Tshwane giants.

The club's Sporting Director, Kaizer Motaung Jr., emphasized that Maboe's vast experience, particularly in continental football, was a primary driver behind the signing. This is especially pertinent as Chiefs prepare for their return to African competition in the CAF Confederation Cup.

"We are aware of Lebo's quality as a player, and the valuable experience he has gained in continental competitions over the past few years is undeniable," Motaung Jr. stated on the club's official website. "His expertise will be crucial for us in both the domestic league and the CAF Confederation Cup. We are delighted to welcome him back to the Amakhosi family. He understands the culture and the expectations of our supporters."

Maboe becomes the tenth new signing for Kaizer Chiefs during the current transfer window, following last week's unveiling of Asanele Velebayi, Luke Baartman, and Etiosa Ighodaro.

The team's immediate focus, however, shifts to a titanic season-opening clash against Maboe's former club, the defending Betway Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns. The match is set for Wednesday evening at the FNB Stadium with a 19:30 kick-off.
