KZN Police Commissioner Urges Public to Donate to SAPS Education Trust, Not to Him Directly
KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkwanazi, has thanked South Africans for their support but urged them not to send funds directly to him. Instead, he called on well-wishers to contribute to the South African Police Service (SAPS) Education Trust, which supports the children of officers who have died in the line of duty.
The Commissioner expressed appreciation to social media personality Chris Excel, who initiated a fundraising campaign intended to buy vehicles for him in recognition of his efforts to fight crime. While acknowledging the goodwill behind the gesture, Mkwanazi said he is already compensated through his salary as a civil servant, funded by taxpayers, and sees no need for personal donations.
“I’m privileged to serve and protect the people of South Africa through my role as a police officer. The public already thank me enough through the salary I receive every month,” he said.
He explained that the SAPS Education Trust uses donations to fund the educational needs of children whose parents, serving as SAPS members, lost their lives in the line of duty. Many of these fallen officers died young, in junior ranks, without having contributed significantly to their pensions, leaving their families financially vulnerable.
“We have seen children graduate because of this fund. It’s the least we can do to support the families of our fallen colleagues,” Mkwanazi added.
The fund is managed by an independent board of trustees, chaired by Mr. Vuan Jana. Mkwanazi encouraged donors to deposit contributions into the SAPS Education Trust’s Nedbank account (Account Number: 1359825) and to use either their name or a preferred anonymous reference.
He urged all South Africans to consider donating, saying the cause helps “maintain dignity and secure the future of children of police officers who are brutally killed while protecting innocent South Africans.”
