A Limpopo man, Mahlangu Johannes Abram (28), has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the brutal rape of a 101-year-old woman, in addition to a three-year sentence for housebreaking.
The horrific crime occurred on Friday, 26 July 2024, at Sehlakoana village, Zaiplaas. According to court testimony, the victim had gone to sleep with all doors and windows securely closed. In the early hours of the next morning, the accused broke into her home, overpowered her, and raped her before fleeing through a window.

The victim immediately alerted her family, and her nephew pursued the suspect. The investigation was led by Warrant Officer Victoria Phala of the Groblersdal Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit, who ensured evidence was swiftly collected.
DNA analysis linked Mahlangu directly to the crime, leading to his arrest and conviction.
The court found Abram guilty under Section 3 of the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences and Related Matters) Amendment Act 32 of 2007. The sentencing was as follows:
The ruling was welcomed as a stern message against crimes of gender-based violence, particularly those targeting society’s most vulnerable.
The case has sparked outrage and sorrow across the Zaiplaas community, with many residents calling for stronger measures to protect elderly citizens. Community leaders described the crime as “inhumane and unforgivable.”
