Boshof, Free State – Six former learners of St. Bernard High School have come forward with allegations of sexual harassment by teachers, claiming incidents occurred while they were enrolled in 2024. The young women, aged 17 to 19, have lodged criminal cases against three educators.
The survivors allege that some teachers sent explicit messages and images via social media platforms. One victim shared her story online earlier this month, prompting others to speak out and publicly disclose their own experiences of harassment.
“We were too afraid to speak out while in matric. We feared victimisation and losing the support we needed to complete our studies,” one former learner said.
Attempts to raise the issue with school authorities at the time were reportedly ignored, leaving learners feeling silenced and unsafe.
In response to the allegations, the Free State Department of Education confirmed that:
Parents reported that they only became aware of the allegations after they gained traction on social media. The department has pledged to provide support for ongoing investigations and ensure accountability.
The former learners emphasised that their primary goal is justice and the prevention of further abuse.
“We want to make sure no other child goes through what we went through,” one survivor said.
Authorities continue to investigate the claims, with the public urged to provide any information that could assist in the process.
