Global retail powerhouse Walmart has confirmed plans to launch its first stores in South Africa before the end of 2025, promising a mix of global brands, fresh groceries, and locally sourced products.
The move follows Walmart’s first Growth Summit held in April, where the retailer engaged with suppliers from 12 African countries and onboarded new small- and medium-sized local businesses.
Kath McLay, president and CEO of Walmart International, said the South African stores will showcase a wide range of merchandise—ranging from fresh food and household essentials to clothing and technology.
“By partnering with South African suppliers and entrepreneurs, Walmart will bring its signature everyday low prices and global standards to the market, while celebrating the country’s rich culture,” McLay noted.
The product mix will also feature Walmart’s private-label brands, alongside affordable groceries, home goods, apparel, and entertainment products.
Beyond its physical stores, Walmart will also introduce digital shopping capabilities to improve customer convenience. This includes online ordering, delivery services, and integrated shopping experiences tailored for South African consumers.
Miles Van Rensburg, president and CEO of Massmart, expressed enthusiasm about the rollout:
“We’re thrilled to begin this journey, introducing the iconic Walmart brand to South African associates, customers and communities. By listening and working together, we aim to build lasting relationships and deliver a delightful shopping experience that reflects the needs and aspirations of South Africans.”
He further stressed Walmart’s commitment to value:
“Every rand matters when it comes to price. It is this balance and mindset on quality and everyday low prices that enables us to deliver and build customer trust.”
Although Walmart has yet to reveal specific store locations, development sites are already in progress. The first stores are scheduled to open before the end of 2025, marking a milestone in Walmart’s expansion into Africa’s most advanced retail market.
