Orlando Pirates Beat Lioli 3–1: Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou Praises Squad Depth After CAF Victory

Bloemfontein – Orlando Pirates secured a 3–1 victory over Lesotho side Lioli FC at the Free State Stadium in a CAF competition clash on Sunday evening. The win highlighted the Buccaneers’ attacking strength and depth, with head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou commending his players’ resilience and adaptability in a busy football calendar.

Pirates show strength in squad rotation

In the post-match press conference, Ouaddou reflected on his team’s performance and the importance of keeping harmony in the squad as the season unfolds.

“It’s so crucial to manage many players, especially when you play in multiple competitions. Sometimes you have talented players, but beyond skills, you also need human qualities to keep trust and unity. I’m very proud because whenever I call on players from the bench, they always give everything,” Ouaddou said.

The coach stressed that with a long season ahead — including league matches, cup competitions, and continental fixtures — squad rotation will be essential to avoid fatigue, injuries, and suspensions.

Tactical choices: substitutions and new roles

Ouaddou’s changes in the second half drew attention, particularly when Relebohile Mofokeng was deployed as a number 10 after Sipho Mbule and Mbatha were substituted. The youngster impressed in his advanced role, showcasing creativity and energy.

The coach also explained his decision to start Tshegofatso Mabasa ahead of Evidence Makgopa, emphasizing the need to balance minutes across the squad:

“At a club like Orlando Pirates, with so many competitions, you must give all your players opportunities. We planned these substitutions to keep freshness for upcoming games. It’s never just me deciding — I work closely with my South African technical staff, and together we make these choices,” he noted.

Lessons from playing days and managerial mentors

When asked how his own playing career and experiences under top managers influenced his coaching, Ouaddou cited legendary mentors such as Arsène Wenger.

“You can teach tactics and organization, but you must never forget the human being. Be true to your players, be honest, and they will give you everything on the pitch. That’s the philosophy I carry everywhere I coach,” he explained.

Transfer window: Pirates content with current squad

With the transfer deadline looming, Ouaddou suggested the club may not be active in the market.

“I’m very happy with the group I have. The mentality and discipline in the dressing room are fantastic. If my bosses feel we need more strength, it’s their decision, but for now, I’m proud to work with these players,” the coach concluded.

Looking ahead

The victory over Lioli keeps Orlando Pirates on track in their continental campaign, boosting confidence ahead of domestic fixtures. With Ouaddou’s emphasis on squad depth, rotation, and unity, the Buccaneers appear well-prepared for the demanding season ahead.
