A dramatic hostage situation has been unfolding in Mamelodi East, outside Pretoria, where a 32-year-old police constable is holding members of his family at gunpoint.
According to authorities, the ordeal began around 08:00 this morning when police responded to a distress call. Upon arrival, officers were met by a 14-year-old boy who managed to escape the house and informed them that his relative, a constable stationed in Boschkop, had locked himself inside with family members.

Police confirmed that at least four gunshots have been fired since the incident began. Two were reportedly fired before officers arrived, and another two during initial negotiations. While no injuries have yet been confirmed, the situation remains tense.
Authorities say the constable’s mother and 18-year-old nephew remain inside the house with him. The motive appears to be a family dispute, although investigators say details are still unclear.
The area has been cordoned off, with hostage negotiators, the Special Task Force, and emergency services stationed nearby. District Commissioner Major Gerald Thin told reporters that police are working around the clock to bring the situation to a peaceful end.
“Negotiators are engaging the constable while the Special Task Force is on standby to respond to any eventuality. Our priority is to ensure no lives are lost,” Thin said.
The district commissioner also revealed that the constable, who is deployed under the Essential Infrastructure Task Team, had no known prior disciplinary or behavioral issues.
