DIRCO Confirms South African Flotilla Delegates in Good Health After Israeli Detention
21hours ago
In a dramatic escalation of tensions at sea, Chief Mandla Mandela — the grandson of former President Nelson Mandela — has appeared in a video message claiming he and fellow activists were abducted by Israeli forces.
The incident occurred aboard the Alma, one of the ships forming part of the Global Sumud Flotilla, a humanitarian campaign seeking to break the blockade of Gaza. According to reports, 19 activists and politicians, including Mandela, were seized during the interception.
Moments before being taken, Mandela recorded a video message from the ship, warning of approaching Israeli naval vessels.
“We are seeing Israeli force ships coming closer to our boat and a possible interception,” Mandela said.
“We call on the global community to exert pressure on your governments to ensure our safe passage to Gaza. If we are abducted, demand our immediate release.”
His appeal underscored fears for the safety of humanitarian activists aboard the flotilla, which carried international representatives in solidarity with Palestinians.
The South African government has confirmed it is working urgently to establish the whereabouts and safety of its citizens.
DIRCO spokesperson Chrispin Phiri said officials are actively engaging with international counterparts to verify reports and secure the release of South Africans on the flotilla.
“It does seem that the ship Mandla Mandela was on has been intercepted,” Phiri noted, cautioning that information remains fluid.
“We are working to determine Israel’s next steps, including whether the detained South Africans may face deportation.”
Civil society organizations and human rights advocates have already begun mobilizing, echoing Mandela’s call for governments worldwide to intervene diplomatically. The incident has sparked outrage, with activists arguing that the interception violates humanitarian principles.
South Africa has repeatedly condemned Israeli actions in Gaza and supported humanitarian missions to deliver aid to Palestinians. The abduction of a delegation that includes the grandson of Nelson Mandela — a symbol of global resistance and peace — is expected to intensify diplomatic strain between Pretoria and Tel Aviv.
For now, the fate of Mandela and his fellow activists remains uncertain as the international community watches closely for Israel’s next move.
