Soweto Residents Demand Accountability After Deadly E-Hailing Attack at Maponya Mall

Soweto, Johannesburg — Residents of Soweto have vowed to keep Maponya Mall closed for seven days following a deadly attack on e-hailing drivers allegedly carried out by minibus taxi operators seeking to dominate the local transport sector. The community is demanding accountability from both mall management and government authorities to address the volatile situation.

Residents Speak Out on Rights and Safety

Community members described the attack as a direct violation of their right to choose safe and convenient transport services.

“When I say I want to take an Uber, I must be allowed,” said one resident. “We must be given our preferences, and the government must protect our rights as the consumers of this country.”

Residents criticized mall management for deploying security forces rather than engaging directly with the community. A local leader alleged:

“They are also shocked as us, but clearly, they’re in cahoots with what is happening.”

The attack involved firearms, including AK-47s, leaving drivers hospitalized and the local community deeply shaken.

Seven-Day Mall Closure

In protest, the Soweto community has announced a seven-day closure of Maponya Mall, preventing both workers and customers from entering until management demonstrates accountability and humility.

“Our message is clear: no business operations will continue until the mall addresses the incident and guarantees safety for everyone,” a spokesperson said.

Broader Concerns About Taxi Monopolies

The incident reflects ongoing tensions between taxi operators and e-hailing services across Johannesburg. Residents highlighted similar issues at Jabulani Mall and Southgate, where monopolistic practices by taxi associations continue to threaten consumer choice and public safety.

Community members insist they will continue advocating for protection of e-hailing services and safe transportation options in their neighborhoods, emphasizing that public safety must be prioritized over profit or monopolistic control.

Police Investigation

Authorities have opened cases of murder, attempted murder, and illegal possession of firearms. Investigations are ongoing, and no suspects have been apprehended as yet.
