Johannesburg, Gauteng – Tragedy struck the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) recruitment process after two trainees died during physical fitness assessments at Ruimsig Stadium.
On 28 August 2025, 24-year-old Marvellous Michael Nyambi from Rabie Ridge collapsed during a fitness test. He was rushed to Yusuf Dadoo Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

A similar tragedy occurred on 1 September 2025, involving 26-year-old Zwelethu Tekete from Braamfischerville Phase 1. Despite immediate efforts by emergency personnel to resuscitate him at the scene, Tekete was declared dead.
JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla expressed condolences to the families of both trainees and reiterated that the safety and well-being of all recruits remain a top priority. He confirmed that the department is currently recruiting 500 new trainees for the 2026 intake, which includes 18 months of intensive training at the JMPD Training Academy.

Authorities have launched investigations to determine the causes of the deaths, with a focus on ensuring that future recruitment and training procedures safeguard the health of all participants.
“These incidents are deeply saddening. We are committed to supporting the families and ensuring safety protocols are rigorously reviewed,” Fihla said.
