Patriotic Alliance deputy president Kenny Kunene cleared of wrongdoing after probe into his presence at Katiso “KT” Molefe’s Sandton home.

Kenny Kunene Cleared of Wrongdoing After Probe Into Links With Suspected Underworld Figure

Johannesburg – Patriotic Alliance (PA) deputy president Kenny Kunene has been officially cleared of any wrongdoing following a high-profile investigation into his alleged connections with controversial businessman Katiso “KT” Molefe.

Kunene, who previously served as Johannesburg MMC for Transport, came under scrutiny in July 2025 when he was found at Molefe’s Sandton home during a dramatic police raid. Authorities were at the property to arrest Molefe, who stands accused of orchestrating the 2022 murder of popular musician Oupa “DJ Sumbody” Sefoka and two of his bodyguards.

Why Was Kunene at Molefe’s House?

At the time of the raid, Kunene explained that he had accompanied a young journalist from his online publication, Africa News Global, to Molefe’s residence. Despite his explanation, the incident immediately triggered speculation and resulted in his suspension from the Patriotic Alliance.

Kunene went further, voluntarily resigning as MMC for Transport and later stepping down as councillor, in what PA leader Gayton McKenzie described as a demonstration of “absolute leadership.”

Independent Probe Clears Kunene

On Monday, McKenzie announced that a probe by respected law firm Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr (CDH) found no evidence contradicting Kunene’s version of events.

“To the DP, you have shown absolute leadership. When you were asked to step down from being an MMC, you asked me ‘Must I also step down as councillor’ and I said yes. You stepped down and you never went out to badmouth the party,” McKenzie wrote on Facebook.

CDH confirmed that:

  • No evidence or testimony disputes Kunene’s explanation for being at Molefe’s home.
  • Molefe remains in custody, and his attorneys are yet to be contacted by CDH.
  • Kunene’s version was found to be true on the face of it.

Kunene’s Political Comeback

With the investigation concluded, Kunene has been reinstated as a councillor in the City of Johannesburg, marking his formal return to active politics. The outcome clears the way for him to resume leadership duties within the Patriotic Alliance, one of South Africa’s fast-rising political parties.

What’s Next?

While Kunene’s name has been cleared, Molefe’s legal battles continue. He faces serious charges linked to organised crime and the high-profile killing of DJ Sumbody, a case that has drawn national attention to Johannesburg’s underworld networks.

For Kunene, however, the probe’s outcome provides political redemption and strengthens his standing within the PA ahead of the 2026 local government elections.
