ALEXANDRA, JOHANNESBURG — The Alexandra community is reeling from shock and grief following the brutal killing of prominent businessman and community leader, Vincent “Vinny” Ndima, who was ambushed and fatally shot in the early hours of Monday, 6 October.
Ndima, who served as the President of the Alexandra Parliament, was travelling with his close friend, Thabo Mahane, when their vehicle came under heavy gunfire near the intersection of 13th Avenue and Joe Nhlanhla Street.
According to witnesses, the attack was carried out by heavily armed suspects, who opened fire with high-calibre rifles, leaving behind more than 40 spent cartridges scattered across the road.
Despite sustaining serious injuries, Mahane reportedly returned fire in an attempt to defend himself and Ndima. The suspects fled the scene shortly afterward. Ndima was declared dead on arrival, while Mahane was rushed to hospital in critical condition.

Known affectionately as “Vinny”, Ndima was widely respected for his tireless efforts to uplift the Alexandra community. Beyond his business ventures, he was deeply involved in local development and social initiatives — from providing food parcels and assisting with funeral costs for struggling families, to supporting home renovations for the elderly and vulnerable residents.
Local councillor Adolf Marema described Ndima as “a selfless leader who always put Alexandra first.”
Just days before his death, Ndima had reportedly warned a local journalist about escalating violence and shootings in the township — a chilling premonition that has left residents both heartbroken and fearful.
Police have opened a murder case, confirming that an extensive investigation is in progress. Law enforcement officials are appealing to the public to come forward with any information that could lead to the arrest of those responsible.
Gauteng police spokespersons say ballistic experts have been deployed to examine the scene, while detectives pursue leads into possible motives behind the deadly ambush.
News of Ndima’s death has sparked an outpouring of grief across Alexandra, where many have described him as “a pillar of strength, a fighter against crime, and a man who never turned his back on his people.”
Memorial gatherings are expected to be held in the coming days as residents come together to honour his life and legacy.
