Deadly Attack on E-Hailing Vehicles at Maponya Mall Leaves One Dead, Two Injured

Soweto, Gauteng — A violent attack on e-hailing vehicles outside Maponya Mall has left one person dead and two others injured, heightening tensions in the Soweto community. The incident occurred late last night and involved multiple armed assailants targeting drivers in a brazen assault.

The Attack

Preliminary reports indicate that four armed men approached an e-hailing vehicle stopped near the mall entrance and opened fire on the driver, who was fatally wounded. The attackers then set the vehicle ablaze.

A second nearby e-hailing vehicle was also targeted. Its driver managed to escape on foot after coming under gunfire, but his vehicle was similarly torched.

Authorities confirmed that another victim — believed to be a passerby — sustained gunshot injuries and, along with the surviving driver, was rushed to hospital for treatment.

Community Concerns

The attack has sparked outrage in Soweto, where residents fear escalating tensions between e-hailing services and taxi operators. Local community leaders are calling on both mall management and government authorities to implement urgent safety measures.

“People have the right to choose safe, convenient transport. This attack is unacceptable, and we demand accountability and protection,” said one community representative.
