A devastating road accident on the N2 highway between Qonce (formerly King William’s Town) and East London has claimed the lives of four people, believed to be members of the same family.
According to Eastern Cape Transport spokesperson Unathi Binqose, the crash occurred on Saturday evening when the driver of a Honda lost control of the vehicle between Amalinda and Hemingways Mall in East London. The Honda veered into the path of an oncoming car, leading to a violent head-on collision.
“All occupants of the Honda — suspected to be a mother, father, and two children — died on the scene,” Binqose confirmed. The driver of the other vehicle was critically injured and rushed to a nearby hospital.
Authorities have opened a case of culpable homicide as investigations continue into the exact cause of the crash. Speed, fatigue, and possible mechanical failure will form part of the inquiry.
“This is a terrible, terrible accident, the kind that we have not reported about in the Eastern Cape in a long, long time,” Binqose said.
